it depends on if you mean the ball or the sport

the ball got it's idea from a Rugby ball

the game started when a group of guys enjoyed rugby but wanted different rules so they created the NFL then later there was a guy who wanted to move the Chicago cardinals to dallas but was denied so he and his friends created the AFL later there was a big game between the NFL champions and the AFL champions NFL won and then they meged into one system the NFL then the AFC and the NFC was created
