Aphrodite often punished those who spurned her or those who said they were more talented or beautiful then she - this is not only Aphrodite's nature, many of the Greek gods did not stand for insults. In this way, the mythology of the Greeks stayed in power - if the people thought that the gods and goddesses would punish them for slights and slander and not paying tribute, more people would worship them to stay in favor and so those who benefited from their worship stayed in power.
