Back in those days, there were no freezers or cooling refrigerators to preserve food so there was an area in the ship to gather live animals for consumption. They were not kept as pets. There is always the figure of the parrot giving company to the pirates.
I think it is because the islands are not so stormy and it is warm plenty of food to forage, animals to hunt, shallow waters...basically it was the ideal place for pirates to refuel. A pirate pit stop!
