US Marines landed on the Japanese held island of Iwo Jima February 19 - March 26, 1945 .
During World War II, there were several island-battles in which 4,000 or more U.S. Marines would be killed. Earlier in the war, during the Guadalcanal Campaign, over 4,000 Marines were killed, while later in the war, in the Allied reconquest of the Philippines, roughly the same number would be lost in action.

Wake Island is a US possession in the Central Pacific, west of Midway. When WW2 started the Japanese attacked the island on December 8, 1941 with the intent to invade & seize the island from the US Marines stationed there. The US Marines successfully beat off the first invasion attempt, and held out until December 23, 1941. Wake Island was also home to the Pan American Clipper (amphibious aircraft) airline base between the US & Asia. Japanese brutality & murder of civilians & military personnel on the island became known during the war.
