Babe Ruth, the Baseball player, called on Mr. Schnering and demanded that he be given a royalty, but Mr. Schnering showed him a picture of the real baby, Ruth, sitting on his desk, and refused to pay anything to the baseball player.

The name was changed to Baby Ruth to avoid copyright problems ( In Pinstripes) The popular idea was the candy bar was named in honor of the Ball player- George Herman ( Babe) Ruth. Ruth was easily the most popular and recognizable Ball Player of the period so all falls in. Ruth was involved in advertising stunts- as one might guess I do not know if he personally promoted the chocolate bar. Decades later there was a short-lived (Reggie) candy bar named in honor of Reggie Jackson. Baby Ruth Candy survives, Reggies do not.
