Pitcher Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians who missed nearly 4 full seasons (all of 1942-1944 and most of 1945) serving in the Navy during World War II.
There is no kind of about it. Both the US Navy and Coast Guard use the Rank Master Chief Petty Officer for the highest enlisted rank. Only Warrant and Commissioned officers rank above Master Chiefs.
USN PO1 or Petty Officer First Class, E-6, is equivalent to an Army SSG, or Staff Sergeant, E-6. The only difference is that Army SSG's are considered SNCO's or Staff Non-Comissioned Officers. Petty Officers 3rd, 2nd, and 1st class are not.

Unlike the stars used to represent officers of flag rank (Admirals) which point upward, the stars on the anchor of the Senior Chief Petty Officer and the Master Chief Petty Officer point down because they do not THEMSELVES represent a higher rank as do the one, two, three, and four stars of Admirals as they are promoted (five star Admirals... and Generals for that matter... exist only in time of war). The anchor and star(s) of the Senior and Master Chief Petty Officer TOGETHER represent rank.

Only if the chief tells them too.
pretty much all officers. Master Chief is the highest rank possible for infantry and is not technically an officer so technically petty officer- general has rank on him FIrst the above answer contains incorrect information. The Ranks of Master Chief and Senior Chief are not used by the infantry which is the Army and Marines. The US Navy and US Coast Guard use the same rank structure and rank titles for their Officer Corps and Enlisted. A MCPO or Master Chief Petty Officer is the highest rank an enlisted member of the Navy or Coast Guard can earn. Just below a MCPO is a SCPO or Senior Chief Petty Officer. Any Petty Officer is refered to as a Non Commissioned Officer (Non-Com). Before the new uniforms came out Chief Petty Officers (Called Chief) , Senior Chiefs (Called Senior) and Master Chiefs (Called Masser Chief) all wore the same uniform as warrant officers and Commissioned Officers. Often a CPO SCPO or MCPO will handle the duies of an officer when an officer is unassigned to a position. FOr example when I served in the Navy, I was a Sonar Tech and we had both a CPO and SCPO in my division. The Officer assigned as ASWO (Anti-SUbmarine Warfare Officer.) transfered out before our new ASWO reported aboard. So STGCS (SW) Don Chapman Served as the ASWO for about a month. The Rank insignia for a CPO is a Gold Fouled Anchor wih the letters USN in silver. For a SCPO their is a SIlver Star atop the Anchor. For MCPO their is a star on each side of the anchor. For the MCPON (Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy) gets a third star on top of the anchor. There is only one MCPON at a time and he answers to the CNO (Chief of Naval Operations) who answers to the SecDef.

Chief Petty Officer 1st Class or CPO1 is the most senior Naval non-commissioned member (NCM) rank of the Canadian Forces. Its Army and Air Force equivalent is Chief Warrant Officer (CWO). It is immediately senior to the rank of Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class and its equivalents, Master Warrant Officer; it is part of the cadre of Warrant Officers. The French language form of the rank is Premier maître de 1re classe (pm 1). The rank insignia of the CPO1 is the Coat of Arms of Canada, worn on both forearms of the Service Dress tunic and on slip-ons on both shoulders of other uniforms. Unlike other CPO2s and Petty Officers, CPO1s wear the cap insignia of Naval officers, although the brim of the peak cap remains plain, the same as other Naval NCMs. CPO1s are generally initially addressed as "Chief Petty Officer Bloggins" or "Chief Bloggins", and thereafter as "Chief", although in correspondence the full rank or abbreviation is used before the member's name. The full appellation "Chief Petty Officer 1st Class" in speech is generally used only when the "first class" distinction must be made, such as to distinguish between members with similar names but differing ranks, or on promotion parades. CPO1s are never addressed as "Sir" or "Ma'am", regardless of the protocol for their Army and Air Force equivalents; in Naval tradition, the titles "Sir" and "Ma'am" are reserved for officers. One of the normal appointments of a CPO1 is that of coxswain, the senior NCM on a ship; it is roughly analogous to an Army Regimental Sergeant-Major (RSM). Due to the unified nature of the CF, however, it is not unheard-of for CPO1s - especially those of the so-called "purple trades", such as logistics or military police to find themselves filling the appointment of RSM in what are otherwise considered "hard" army units (such as Service Battalions). CPO1s may also hold appointments as the senior NCM in a larger formations or on a base; these appointments, and their respective insignia, include: * Base Chief Petty Officer (BCPO) - the Coat of Arms over crossed crusader swords * Formation Chief Petty Officer - the Coat of Arms over the central insignia of the badge of the Canadian Armed Forces (an anchor, crossed swords and an albatross in flight). * Fleet Chief Petty Officer (Fleet CPO) - the Coat of Arms over a small foul anchor * Command Chief Petty Officer (CCPO) - the Coat of Arms with a wreath of laurel wrapped around the base * Canadian Forces Chief Warrant Officer (CFCWO) - the Coat of Arms with a wreath of twenty-eight maple leaves wrapped around the base and sides. The title of this highest non-commssioned position in the Canadian Forces is not, however, ever referred to as "Canadian Forces Chief Petty Officer" if the incumbent is from the Navy. CPO1s generally mess and billet with Petty Officers and other Chief Petty Officers, and their Army and Air Force equivalents, Warrant Officers and Sergeant. Their mess on naval bases or installations are generally named the "Chiefs and POs Mess".
Their formal military address would be "sir" (or "ma'am" if female) or "Chief". This would only apply while they are in uniform.
Not that I can find anywhere, while officers are sometimes put in charge of all the troops in a particular theater, no mater what country they are from, an example would be, Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr., who was put in charge of the coalition forces during the first Iraq war. NCO's, Non Commissioned Officers, are only put in charge of the troops per the orders of their commander. Highest ranks in the US Armed services, no particular order: US Air Force: Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force US Coast Guard: Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard US Army: Sergeant Major of the Army US Marines: Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps US Navy: Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy.
