Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891. A peach basket, with its bottom removed, was pinned to the railing of the gym's balcony. To earn a point, the basketball must be shot into the peach basket.

The legend is that Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, used a peach basket. You don't see them much anymore, but farmers used to use them to collect and ship peaches in. They are circular, about 18 inches across.
