It was invented by Abner Doubleday in 1839 in NY.

It's a myth that Doubleday invented Baseball. Historians have largely disproved the story of Abner and baseball. There are published accounts of the game being played in Ontario Canada prior to this date. Sporting Life magazine published an account of a game in Beachville Ontario, Canada in 1838, a full year before Doubleday was supposed to have invented the game.

Variations of the game have been played for centuries in other countries.

But the man credited with being the "father of baseball" was Alexander Cartwright.

As Baseball was not invented, but rather evolved from various European bat and ball games including Cricket, it is would be a disservice to history to mark a single date as its definitive starting point. However, most baseball historians would agree that by codifying the "20 Original Rules of Baseball" or the "Knickerbocker Rules," on September 23, 1845, Alexander Cartwright and the New York Knickerbockers Base Ball Club marked a noteworthy date in the genesis of the game. The story that a Civil War general invented baseball in the town of Cooperstown in 1839 is an obvious falsehood, and based entirely on the "recollection" of Abner Graves -- a man who was five years old in 1839, and died in an insane asylum. That general was, indeed, from Cooperstown, but in 1839 he was a student at West Point, a military academy from which leaves were very difficult to obtain. His known writings are voluminous but never mention baseball, and the general's closest friend never recalled any mention in decades of conversation.

Thus, baseball was not invented in a specific year, like Basketball or volleyball; but instead developed over many years from the games of rounders and town ball.

In 1845 Alexander Cartwright first wrote down a set of rules for what was called the "New York Game," and from this the game we now know as baseball evolved over a few decades.

The question is unknown -- and probably unknowable. Baseball as is played today was not invented at a specific point in history, like basketball or volleyball. Instead, it evolved from the American sport of town ball and the British games of cricket and rounders. In 1791, for instance, the village of Pittsfield passed a law banning the playing of "baseball" within eighty yards of a town meeting -- but I seriously doubt the game they banned would be considered "baseball" today.

In 1845 Alexander Cartwright was the first to WRITE the rules for a game where a player is no longer "out" when hit by a thrown ball, doing so for a group of upper class New Yorkers. Whether he invented these rules, or simply wrote down what had already been agreed to, has never been determined. The number of teams playing these "New York" rules continued to expand, the rules continued to evolve, controlling organizations developed, people started getting paid to play, and by the 1870s a game that would probably be recognized today was being played in a league format.

And, I should mention, newspapers of the 1870s were already decrying that greedy players and owners were ruining the purity of the game.
