The most obvious differences are the equipment. Guys didn't have helmets or protective padding, and goalies didn't have masks. Also, sticks were the primary use of contact, so stick swinging contributed to many of the suspensions and injuries.

Another important change in the 20s is that this was the first decade that hockey was an "offside" game. Before it was an "onside" game where only lateral and backward passes were allowed. Now, with it being an offside game, the style of the game changed from stickhandling individual based game to a passing team based game.
