In what country did figure skating start?

The United Kingdom seems to be the answer to this Question, while ice skating has been around since pre-historic times it seems that in 1742 the first ice skating association was formed in Edinburgh. The first instructional book concerning ice skating was published in London in 1772. The book, written by a British artillery lieutenant, Robert Jones, describes basic figure skating forms such as circles and figure eights. The book was written solely for men, as women did not normally ice skate in the late 18th century. It was with the publication of this manual that ice skating split into its two main disciplines, speed skating and figure skating.

Who were the popular soviet pair figure skaters of the 60s?

Oleg Protopopov and his wife, Ludmila Belousova won Olympic Gold Medals in Pairs Skating in 1964 and 1968. They were World Champions four consecutive times (1965-1968) and also won four consecutive European titles. The musical piece most often associated with them is Franz Listz's Liebestraum. They are credited with having invented three types of death spirals and many transitional elements of pairs skating. As late as 2007, the couple, who were then in their 70s, skated occasionally in ice shows. Their performances were not at a competitive level, of course, but their conditioning, unison and musicality were still evident. In February 2014, the Protopopovs, as they are commonly known, attended some ice skating competitions at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

Is ice skating challenging?

At the beginning it is because you feel as if you are either ready to move on or just don't understand a single thing you are learning. But if you stick with it you enjoy it because great things are soon to come. Such as your single jumps! Waltz jump, toe loop, salchow, loop, flip, lutz, and axel!!! Those are all fun but the reason you learn your singles is to prepare for doubles and triples!!!! If you are committed to figure skating then it will seem like a beautiful sport and you also burn lots of calories in figure skating. Another good thing about figure skating is you can express yourself and your feelings. Ice skating will be challenging and costly at times but if you're sure that that's what you truly want, then it's completely worth it. So go for your life-long dream and don't let any nasties snatch you and blow you away. (As in jealous competitors of yours.)

Where are compulsory figures found?

Compulsory figure illustrations can be had from the skating federation. They have been largely discontinued in these times simply because they are not very watchable. See the link below for more information on compulsories. However it is interesting to note that the skating federation's floral looking symbol, their "logo", is a design that is compulsory figures that was actually skated and photographed.
