Teams don't keep statistics of things like that so I can't give you an actual number. My guess is there probably have been upwards of 400-500 or so with most of them occurring long ago when stealing home was much more common than it is today. I can tell you that in the 53 times that Ty Cobb stole home, six were part of triple steals.

The last triple steal occurred on May 28, 2008 previous to that it last occurred on Oct. 1, 1987, by Atlanta against Houston according to the Elias Sports Bureau. David Dellucci of the Cleveland Indians was on third, Grady Sizemore on second, and Jamey Carroll was at first when the triple steal occurred against Chicago White Sox pitcher Ehren Wasserman. (All 3 players were credited witha stolen base making it a triple steal).

The Milwaukee Brewers have turned five triple plays in franchise history, and hit into three additional triple plays. They are:

  1. April 28, 1971 at Boston; OF Tony Conigliaro of the Red Sox hit into a 6-4-3-2 triple play with runners on 1st and 3rd (the runner on third tried to score on the 6-4-3 double play attempt).
  2. September 3, 1973 vs. Cleveland; with runners on 1st and 2nd, Brewers 2B Don Money hit a line drive to the Indians 2B, who caught the ball, tagged the bag to double off the runner on second, then threw to 1st to get the runner off the bag there.
  3. May 16, 1979 at California; Angels 2B Bobby Grich grounded into a 5-4-3 triple play with runners on 1st and 2nd.
  4. August 20, 1980 vs. Detroit; Brewers 3B Sal Bando grounded into a 5-4-3 triple play with runners on 1st and 2nd.
  5. May 13, 1986 vs. Seattle; Brewers 1B Cecil Cooper hit a grounder to first with runners on 1st and 2nd; Mariners 1B threw out the runner at second to the shortstop. Runner on 2nd rounded third and tried to score, but was caught in a rundown with the pitcher. Pitcher threw to the Seattle catcher, who tagged the runner for the second out. Catcher then threw the ball back to second, where the 2B tagged Cooper out trying to advance on the throw.
  6. July 28, 1997 vs. Toronto; Blue Jays SS Alex Gonzalez grounded into a 5-4-3 triple play with runners on 1st and 2nd. (This was the last triple play turned by the Brewers in the American League.)
  7. April 16, 1999 vs. the Chicago Cubs; Cubs C Benito Santiago grounded into a 5-4-3 triple play with runners on 1st and 2nd.
  8. September 6, 2009 vs. San Francisco at Miller Park; Giants OF Aaron Rowand grounded into a 5-4-3 triple play with runners on 1st and 2nd.

The Triple Crown isn't an award; it's a rare accomplishment. It is attained when a hitter leads a league in batting average, home runs and runs batted in during the same season.

National League Triple Crown winners (five times): Hugh Duffy, Providence Grays (1894); Rogers Hornsby, St. Louis Cardinals (1922 and 1925); Chuck Klein, Philadelphia Phillies (1933); and Joe "Ducky" Medwick, St .Louis Cardinals (1937).

American League Triple Crown winners (nine times): Nap Lajoie, Philadelphia A's (1901); Ty Cobb, Detroit Tigers (1909); Jimmie Foxx, Philadelphia A's (1933); Lou Gehrig, New York Yankees (1934); Ted Williams, Boston Red Sox (1942 and 1947); Mickey Mantle, New York Yankees (1956); Frank Robinson, Baltimore Orioles (1966); and Carl Yastrzemski, Boston Red Sox (1967).

Note: Tip O'Neill of the St. Louis Browns won the Triple Crown in the old American Association in 1887.

The first recorded triple play was by the Hartford Dark Blues on May 13, 1876 in a game against the New York Mutuals. With runners on first and second the Mutuals tried a hit and run. The batter hit a hard line drive to the second baseman who caught the ball for out #1. The second baseman threw to the first baseman to double off the runner for out #2. The first baseman then threw back to the second baseman to catch the runner off second base for out #3.

For all triple plays in MBL, the number varies from year to year -- sometimes as few a zero (in 1961 and 1974) and sometimes as many as 19 (in 1890). Since the 1930 season, there have been a total of 314 triple plays in MLB, which averages out to about 3.8 triple plays per season.

What is baseball's triple crown?

There are triple crowns for hitters and pitchers. The hitter's triple crown is won by the player that hits the most home runs, has the best batting average, and has the most RBIs. This is rarely done and the last time it was done, prior to the 2008 season, was the 1967 season. The pitcher's triple crown is won by the pitcher that has the most wins, most strikeouts, and lowest ERA. The pitcher's triple crown has been won six times in the past 11 seasons but, prior to that, was also a pretty rare occurrance.
