Actively playing, there are only about 5 or 6. The answer depends on how you define African-American. If you mean black players, the answer is a much higher number, but because most of the active black players were born in Canada or Europe, the number of Americans is significantly smaller. In total there are about 15 African Americans who have been drafted by or played in the NHL. (Val James, Mike McHugh, Donald Brashear, Mike Grier, Gerald Coleman, Dustin Byfuglien, Francis Boullion, Kyle Okposo, Greg Mauldin, Robbie Earl, J.T. Brown, John Carter, Austin Levi, Emerson Etem, and Cristoval Nieves).
The number of black players (all nationalities) is 106 as of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. For names, photos and stats, visist the Black Hockey Players Wall of Fame.
