The IOC refers to an olympiad as a 4 year period beginning with the conclusion of the previous games and culminating with the Olympic games. Thus the first olympiad in Athens, Greece concluded in 1896 although there was no previous games. The 29th olympiad concluded with the games in Beijing, China in 2008. Incidently the 6th, 12th, and 13th retain their number even though there were no games due to World Wars 1 and 2. And the Winter Games do not follow this system at all being simply known as Olympic Winter Games numbered consecutively and NOT including those not held in 1940 and 1944.

I'm not sure what this means, but one of these is probably the answer. Either China (Beijing) has hosted the Olympic Games ONCE - in 2008. Or China hosted the Summer Games of the 29th Olympiad (of the modern era) in 2008. Or China hosted the 26th celebration of the (Summer) Games (as the Games in three of the 29 Olympiads were not celebrated due to the World Wars) in 2008.
This is the 29th olympiad
The 2008 Games are considered the XXIX Olympiad (29th Olympiad).
29th Olympaid or the XXIX Olympiad
The 2008 Beijing games is the 29th olympiad.
29th
The 2004 Olympic Games were held in the first year of the 28th Olympiad, which ended in 2007. The Beijing Games were held in the first year of the 29th Olympiad, and so on.
639 Chinese athletes competing in the 29th Olympiad hosted by China in Beijing!
The first Olympic Games of the modern era (1st Olympiad) were held in Athens in 1896. The Olympics are held every 4 years, so 2008 is the 29th (XXIX) Olympiad. (1896 + 28 * 4 = 2008)
The 2008 Olympics in Beijing will be called the 29th Olympiad. They are actually numbered as if they were held every four years. For example, the cancelled 1916 Olympics would have been the 6th, but the 1920 Olympics were called the 7th. The Olympics were skipped in 1916, 1940 and 1944 due to the wars. So the 29th Olympiad will really be the 26th modern Olympics.
Every four years. the first Olympic games as we know it was held in 1896. the 2008 Olympics was known as the XXIX (29th) Olympiad
