In the early 1920's helmets were leather. In the 1930's people tried to make helmets out of plastic, but they shaddered and caused worse injuries. So leather helmets survived to see another game.In the late 1960's plastic helmets were tried again and this time they suceeded.

There have been many improvements to football helmets since the first organized game was played. The most important is that helmets are no longer leather, but rather they are padded sheets of molded metal. The helmet is now form fitted to the player with removable chin straps and some even include speakers so that players can hear the play. As technology improves the helmet is likely not done evolving.
