He got the nickname soon after he signed with minor-league Baltimore Orioles at the age of 19 -- at the time, legally a minor. His story is that his fellow players considered him a "babe in the woods" for his naivete; others say he was the team owner's "babe" because of Ruth's young age. The nickname stuck.

By his own admission, Ruth was, when he first began to play professional Baseball, about as naive a rookie as anyone who played the game. Also, because Ruth was 19 at the time, the team owner Jack Dunn had to be his legal guardian. His team-mates referred to him as a "babe in the woods" and "Jack's babe." The nick-name stuck.

Babe Ruth was born George Herman Ruth. Some of his nicknames while he was playing baseball included The Bambino, The Sultan Of Swat, and The Babe, which is the origin of the name Babe Ruth. First called "Babe" by his teammates on the Baltimore Orioles, his first professional team because of his youth.
