Most left handed throwing catchers played in the 19th century. Benny Di Stefano (I forget his team), Mike Squires (White Sox, 1980s) and Dale Long (Pirates, 1950s) are the last position players to catch left-handed in the Major Leagues. Chris Short, lefty pitcher with the Phillies in the 1960s, caught a game but is not credit- ed with any chances....I don't know the circumstances. Smokey, Mesa, AZ ---- Chris Short was the 'starting' catcher for the Phillies in the first game of a doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants played on June 29, 1961 at Shibe Park in Philly. Phillies manager Gene Mauch also had pitchers Jim Owens and Don Ferrarese in the starting lineup as right fielder and center fielder, respectively. Prior to the first pitch, Mauch replaced all three with legitimate players.
