Direct injuries are defined as those fatalities which resulted directly from participation in the fundamental skills of football (such as tackling and blocking). Indirect injuries are those injuries that are caused by systemic failure as a result of exertion while participating in football activity or by a complication which was secondary to a nonfatal injury (such as heart failure and heat stroke). Bill Masterton, a center for the Minnesota North Stars, is the only player to die as a direct result of injuries suffered in a hockey game. He took a check and fell backwards, striking the back of his head on the ice. He lost his life two days later.

There was another player, Reggie Brown of the Detroit Lions, who suffered a serious spinal cord injury in a game against the New York Jets in 1997. He was administered CPR on the field which saved his life. He had immediate surgery for his injury and his recovery was nothing short of miraculous.
