Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Bulldogs, and Toronto (no name, often called the Arenas).

Those were the five charter members of the league in 1917. All except the Toronto franchise had existed in the NHA. The NHL was created to get rid of Toronto Blueshirts owner Eddie Livingstone. So the other owners created a new league with a new Toronto team (they eventually became the Maple Leafs).

Quebec sat out the first two years and began playing in 1919. The Montreal Wanderers folded after 6 games because their home arena burnt down.
