Zito had an ineffective second half in 2010. Before the All-Star break, he was 7-4 with a 3.76 earned run average. After the All-Star break, he was 2-10 with a 4.70 ERA. In his final 12 regular-season games, he went 1-8 with an ERA of 6.14. He particularly struggled on October 2, 2010, in the Giants's penultimate regular-season game against the San Diego Padres. A win would have clinched the National League West title for San Francisco. But Zito walked home two runs, lasted three innings and was literally booed off the field by the San Francisco home crowd. The Padres won the game 4-2, which forced the Giants to win the division title on the final day of the season. Zito redeemed himself during the Giants' playoff run in 2012 that culminated with a World Series championship in four games over the Detroit Tigers.
