It remains a matter of debate but it is believed that it was invented in the mid 1850's by British soldiers staying in Nova Scotia, Canada. They used a rubber ball initially to play the first Ice Hockey game with some basic rules.

Eventually this same game was played with more formal rules, set by the McGill University students in Montreal, Canada in 1879. What was called the 'Ice Hockey' in mid 1850s was popularly known as 'Modern Ice Hockey' by later 18th century. These formal rules, better known as "McGill Rules", substituted the rubber ball with a puck.

Montreal saw the first national hockey organization i.e. Amateur Hockey Association of Canada in the year 1885. Later many amateur clubs and leagues were established in Canada. Ontario was the first to have a league of four teams formed in the same year.

And so on, and so on.

But until further notice from a caveman, it was the Canadians. Figures.
