As a publicity stunt by owner Bill Veeck, Eddie Gaedel was signed to a contract and saw action in the second game of a doubleheader on August 19, 1951. Gaedel stood 3 feet 7 inches tall and wore the number 1/8 on his jersey. He drew a 4 pitch base on balls in his only plate appearance in MLB.
