In 1976, Taiwan was the Republic of China at the Winter Games but did not compete at the Summer Games because of a dispute over its name. My guess would be Republic of China or Taiwan. Under great pressure from the IOC who wished to bring in the People's Rep. of China to the games they had to eventually accept the contrived description of "Chinese Taipei" to stay in the Olympics beginning in 1984. While it may be indefensible to refer to an island off the coast of China as Rep. of China I see nothing wrong with the use of Taiwan but even worse for them they can't even carry their own flag which is extremely petty by the IOC which tends to overlook a great many things to placate the People's Republic as we saw in 2008.
