To some extent, a person with less excess weight (someone who is not overweight or obese) will run somewhat faster. Beyond that, a person at a normal body weight should not strive to lose weight as it reall will not make them move much faster.

Any type of regular cardiovascular (cardio) exercise can help you lose weight because you burn calories both during exercise and afterwards for a while. There are many different kinds of cardio exercise. In fact, any activity that increases your heart and respiration rates is cardio exercise.

However, there are different degrees of cardio ranging from mild to intense.

It is helpful to divide them into mild and intense. There is an inverse proportion between intensity and duration.

Intense exercise must be brief! For example, you can sprint 100 meters, but you cannot sprint 5000 meters.

Intense cardio exercises include running, interval training, and graded exercise protocol.

Brisk walking is an example of mild cardio exercise.

Mild cardio exercises keep your maximum heart rate at about 60 to 65%. Intense cardio exercises involve a maximum heart rate that is considerably higher (usually up to about 85% or even 90%). In addition, because intense cardio is intense, it must be brief, which is great if you are lazy or bored by prolonged mild cardio exercise such as brisk walking.

Moreover, intense cardio works better.

So, why does it work better?


Well, though mild cardio burns more body fat than intense cardio exercise does, by doing mild cardio regularly your body will 'adapt' to mild cardio. It will adapt by storing fat during the recovery period until your next mild cardio exercise session.

Whereas, intense cardio burns more fat overall because it stimulates more fat burning between intense cardio exercise sessions.

However, running will not help you to lose weight unless you eating habits are correct. Most of all avoid or strictly limit all refined processed carbohydrates (apart from a rare treat).

As deliciously addictive as they are, over-consumption of refined processed carbohydrates is a major cause of weight gain, obesity, high blood pressure, Heart disease, borderline and type 2 Diabetes, and many other diet related diseases and conditions.

Replace those foods with more of the specific fat burning proteins, and take advantage of the 'thermic' effect of these foods. Drinking plenty of water will enable you body to process these foods correctly.
