Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the 16th President of the United States. He was elected in 1860 and re-elected in 1864, serving from March 4, 1861 to April 15, 1865.

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. As a child, he only attended school for one and one half years, but he read as much as he could. He did not like killing animals, even for food. His early careers were as a lawyer and a legislator.
On November 4, 1842, Lincoln married Mary Todd, daughter of a slave owning family. They had four sons: Robert Lincoln, Edward Lincoln, Willie Lincoln, and Tad Lincoln. On March 4, 1861, Lincoln became the 16th (and tallest at 6' 4") President of the United States. His Vice Presidents were Hannibal Hamlin and Andrew Johnson.
While he was president, the issue of slavery came to a head, and the American Civil War began. Following the Battle of Gettysburg, Lincoln travelled to the dedication of the site and gave the Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863.
On April 14, 1865, President Lincoln was shot (by John Wilkes Booth) while he was watching a play at Ford's Theater. He died 9 hours later on April 15.
