Evonne Cawley was famous for being a successful indigenous Australian tennis player. Born Evonne Goolagong, Cawley became a professional tennis player who was the first female Aboriginal Australian to be a prominent sportsperson.

Evonne Cawley's tennis career included 92 pro tournament victories, including winning the Australian Open four times, Wimbledon twice and the French Open once. She also represented Australia seven times in the Federation Cup; she won in 1971, 1973 and 1974.

In 1971, Cawley was named the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year. Although she retired in 1982, she kept her connections with Australian competition tennis, being appointed captain of the Federation Cup team for 2002.
