The major social classes during Shakespeare's time, also known as the Elizabethan Era, were the Nobility, the Gentry, the Yeomanry and the Poor. The nobility were the smallest group and were the extensions of the royal family, the gentry were also a small group and were wealthy landowners. The yeomanry were the middle class and consisted of craftsmen, tradesmen and farmers. The poor were the ill, disabled and any others who could not afford to sustain themselves.

Clothing was not mass produced like it is today so they had to have it made for them. The rich hired a seamstress to make their dresses. The poor wore simple clothing and would sometimes trade with the rag man for items. Materials and fabrics were considered very valuable and reused many times. They were so valuable that they could be sold for extra cash when a person was broke. There were also laws concerning what colors/gems that people could wear. If a person was poor they couldn't wear purple, red, blue or yellow this was reserved for the wealth and royal.

The Elizabethan poor laws changed the way the poor were looked after in Elizabethan England. Rather than being looked after by charity and begging a compulsory poor rate (tax) was introduced and distributed to local parishes who would then look after the 'deserving poor'. The deserving poor being those who widowed, orphaned, elderly or disabled or became poor due to a natural disasters. This also meant that vagrants, who were poor by choice, could no longer beg for their living.
