Posse Comitatus Act -- A US Federal law originally intended to prevent the use of American military forces in domestic police work. That is, the army would handle any problems with, say, Germany or France and the sherriff would handle things in his neck of the woods. The law has been gutted - especially in the past 20 years - so that many "exceptions" now apply. For a better understanding of the original intent (dating from post US Civil War days) to current anti-terrorist applications, see this link: http://www.homelandsecurity.org/journal/articles/Trebilcock.htm Additionally, read this article/explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posse_Comitatus_Act
