Because travel was an even more expensive affair back then than it is now, we know with certainty, that the Jews who traveled to Rome came from the tribe of Levi, the wealthiest in all of ancient Israel due to temple revenue from the leaders of that tribe, the Cohanim (the priests). By the time Rome invaded Israel, which they renamed Judaea ("land of the Jews"), and later Palestine ("land of the Philistines"), the city of Rome had a community of 20,000 Jews. Not much by today's standards but in ancient times that number is huge. Recently in Italy, they have discovered vast numbers of catacombs with Jewish menoras on top of them, some going back over 2,000 years. Anyway, Zimcha's show, demonstrated damning evidence, that the ancestors of ashkenazi Jewry, are indeed Levites. The show also talked about how many of the households had large "temple caliber" menoras. While any Jew can own a menora, only a priest, is allowed to own one made for a synagogue. In modern times, only a Rabbi. I'm not making this up; those are the rules. The sheer number of menoras possesed by that community, not to mention the fact that to bury someone in a catacomb was an extremely expensive affair, in addition, the prevalence of the Cohanim gene in the Italian population, all point to the fact, that the ashkenazi are Levites. Now, you add up the numbers, and, of course many Italians are dark and "look Jewish." Its more the Jew in them, than the Arab in them, that makes most Italians dark, or, rather, many dark Italians dark. The majority of Italians do not have Jewish ancestry mind, most are European, but, every once in a while, a person from Israel visiting Italy, or even a person from New York or Los Angeles, will run into an Italian who looks like a cousin, uncle, or parent.
