Quidditch is a fictional game played in the Harry Potter books. In 2005, students at Middlebury College in Vermont started playing Quidditch as an intermural sport. The first intercollegiate Quidditch match was held in November 2007 between Middlebury College and Vassar College. In 2007, the Intecollegiate Quidditch Association was founded. In 2010 it changed its name to the International Quidditch Association.
Over 400 colleges and 300 high schools compete in Quidditch, the majority of which are in the United States. Every year, the IQA holds a World Cup tournament in New York City where four colleges compete for the title.
Although the sport is played at many colleges, it is not officially recognized as a NCAA sport. See related links for more information on the IQA.
In the Harry Potter books, Quidditch is a game played on flying broomsticks. There are 7 players - 2 beaters, 3 chasers, 1 keeper and 1 seeker. The chasers try to put the quaffle past the keeper and through the hoops at the end of the field, the beaters try to keep the bludgers away from their teammates, and seeker tries to catch the golden snitch to end the game. Each quaffle is worth 10 points and the golden snitch is worth 150 points.
