On November 14, 1982, Duk Koo Kim fought Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini for the WBA World Lightweight Champion crown. In the fourteenth round, Kim was felled by a smashing straight right from Mancini. Kim struggled to his feet after a few seconds, but the fight was called at 19 seconds into the round. Kim went to his corner where he lapsed into a coma. He was rushed to the hospital in Las Vegas, but the surgery to relieve pressure on his brain was unsuccessful. He died 4 days later, having never regained consciousness, when his mother requested doctors remove life support.
