Shakespeare's play wasn't the first telling of the story: he got it from Arthur Brooke, who got it from a French story, the author of which got it from an Italian story based on earlier Italian stories which are based on the Latin. Or you could be talking about an actual book which was based on Shakespeare's play, which is not strictly speaking a book.
