I use pillows to cushion the fall for those sets that I"m maxing out, but the dumbbells are pretty durable and can withstand a good deal of abuse.
Yes they can be. When dealing with dumbells one must take extra caution not to drop them or let them roll on the surface. Also it is important to bend down when picking up a dumbell.

I believe your question is, how to estimate how much one can safely lift. Correct? You should always play it safe, when dealing with heavyweights. If you don't have anyone to spot you, I'd advise using dumbells aposed to a barbell. If comes the occasion you've to complete failure and cannot lift the weights any higher. You can just drop dumbells, a bar bell could drop on your chest, neck or head. Causing serious injury or death. Try not to show off too much in the gym. Your results will show off for you.
