I'm on a track team so... I suggest that when you have a track meet, stretch ALOT. Yes, running is always important, but you do want to stay as loose as possible. I run 4 miles every day. Though I'm not a long distance runner, it deffinately gets you ready for the big day. Do whatever is most comfortable and I'm sure that you'll do well.
There are many body weight workouts specific for target areas. If you need to lose weight in a specific area there are exercises for it. Running is good for your entire body.
Jogging and weight lifting are good exercises.
