If you have any interest in running 40 miles, you will need to develop minimum of a 1 year program to develop the strength and allow your body to adapt to that stress. Do you currently run? If so, how much? Have you ever completed a 10k, half marathon or full marathon? In addition to your training program, you will need to get your nutrition and recovery dialed in too.

If you have properly gotten into shape, and are not under serious health constrictions, there is nothing wrong with running 5 miles. If it seems to overwhelming to run 5 miles at one time, you may chose to break it up into 2 or 3 smaller runs in the same day. After you run 5 miles consistantly you can move on to longer runs.
