Depends on how many times you lift it. Once doesn't use up enough to matter either way. You'd have to keep going, continuously, for the better part of an hour to achieve anything.

Weight loss and calorie burn through exercise is mainly about getting and keeping your heart rate up. And pretty much all kinds of consistent activites, like running, bicycling, swimming, dancing etc etc does a better job of keeping your heart rate up than lifting weights does.

If you can lift weights at a high enough intensity and long enough to match the pulse rate and duration of a run, they you'll burn the same amount of calories. But odds are you can't.

I can do around 1000 cal/hour during intense cardio, but find it really difficult to get past 600 while doing weight training.

Keep in mind that the big thing is your diet. If you are overeating it's pretty much impossible to exercise hard enough to lose anything that way. A snack that takes 5 minutes to eat, like a cupcake, can take one hour to burn off.

I am not sure if this is the right answer, since the question is rather unclear, but I will try my best to answer this one.

There are two things that this question is about. Either it is:


A) Do you lose weight by lifting 5 pounds (in a one time occasion)?


No, not really. Your body and it's muscles aren't stimulated from this one time action. The same thing applies to heavy things also. If you move a 50 pound television to your car, it doesn't necessarily mean that your body starts working hard to lose weight.


B) Is 5 pounds a big enough weight to stimulate weight loss?


Yes and no. Basically five pounds can work, but it depends totally on the exercise and how strong you are. If you aren't a very strong person and you feel like that is the best weight you can do exercises with, then you can lose weight with it. But, if you are strong enough to do some exercise with 20 pounds, then you have no reason to do the exercise with such a low weight. Weight training is about pushing yourself to your limits, not about doing light exercises that don't really strain your body.
