Both yoga and Pilates are mind-body forms of exercise, designed to deepen the connection between your brain (as in how you think about movement) and your muscles (how you actually move). Both methods rely on the use of breath to pace movement. In addition, both are low impact exercises. Beyond that, though, there are some fundamental differences. The physical practice of yoga involves your whole body and classes are typically done with an emphasis on standing poses (except in some gentle or restorative classes). Pilates focuses on building core strength and is usually done mostly lying on a mat. And, many forms of yoga have a spiritual dimension, which Pilates does not.
