Yes, it is possible to tear a hole (hernia) from lifting too much. In the case of lifting weights, most often the muscles in the lower abdominal area are affected. The muscles, especially weaker muscles, can tear from the extreme pressure/ strain put on them from lifting very Heavy weights. The contents (an organ or any other bodily structure) inside the wall can then "spill out" or stick out causing pain and what is known as a Hernia. Although treatments such as surgery are available, prevention is always the best way to go. Ask a friend to help when lifting heavy objects, Don't push yourself too hard with weights at the gym and see a doctor if you have constipation or abdominal issues, especially if you are a person in your golden years.

It can, but more common in weightlifters are inguinal hernias on either (or both) sides of the groin. If the weightlifter uses improper lifting or breathing techniques and allows excess pressure to be exerted on the diaphragm while holding their breath during the force and contraction of abdominal muscles in the lift, it might cause the weakness in the muscle of the diaphragm to worsen.

Well I lift weights 5 to 6x a week and it very rarely bothers mine, usually it's because I drank some coffee or juice before working out. I have had a hiatal hernia for about 20 years or so. I also had an inguinal hernia which did effect my workout until I had it repaired. Taking some form of acid reducer ..ie... Nexium, Zantac or Prilosec will reduce if not completely eliminate the side effects associated with your hiatal hernia.
