Why did Barbaro die?

he died because he broke his leg racing after a false start. ( he broke through the starting gate.) his leg healed pretty much but he died of laminitis in his front hooves i think.

Barbaro was 4 years old when his right rear leg was shattered during the 2006 Preakness. He was hospitalized for nearly 8 months before the decision was made to euthanize.
