Because polo is the oldest team sport known to man its origins are not well known. It's been rumored that it began as a sport played in ancient Persia when one tribe defeated another, as a game of keep away with the head of the conquered chief. It is said that it then developed into a game with a hook and the corpse of a goat; later a ball made of goat stomach; and finally a wooden ball and a mallet instead of a hook.

Hope this helps!

Camel polo most likely originated in the Middle East, due to the European influence, and the abundance of camels.
