Jockeys need to be fit for many reasons. For one, they are sitting atop of an animal who weighs an huge amount, they need to be able to control the horse and stay on it, as the horses are moving at very fast speeds. Being in the ''jockey position'' takes a lot of strength, the horse can easily pull you around if you are not in good shape. Also there is a weight limit for jockeys, you have to stay under certain weights, it's hard to control those horses at such tiny weights and therefore you must be fit in order to control the horse.

The purpose of the jockey in a horse race is to guide and control the horse they are riding through the race.
