A polo helmet serves to protect the player from being hit by a stick or ball in the head. It must also offer protection in case the player falls from his pony.

A polo helmet can from the outside be confused extremely easily with a riding helmet, but must be able to withstand many hard hits, unlike an equestrian helmet which is designed for only a singly hit. In actual construction polo helmets are very similar to cricket batting helmets, except that they have much more protection at the back of the head.
