to narrow the field, it means to make the field smaller by the horses closser together to one another and less spread out. if they are spread out, then it is called they are widening the field. both can be dangerous because if the field is narrowed too much horses can clip the heels of the horse in front of then bringing both horses down and any others behind them, and if you widen the field, if a horse travles outward it often bring a horse with it and they can trip each other up and fall. or because the footing is softer and it is a slow track, the horses may stumble comming from a fast hard track near the rail to a slow bumpy track near the middle of the field.
