Not much, people who do it for a profession look at the bloodlines, who they are up against, how much they have trained, how many times they have raced and what places they took, what kind of horse they are, and occasionally who is riding them. There isn't much luck in it, sometimes the winners are having luck, but the betting for those who really care, isn't luck, they probably have process that they go through to decide who they think the winner will be.
