It's pretty complicated. Let's say there's a total purse of $5 million. Half (say) comes from the track. That's split up according to order of finish--the winner gets the most, the driver who blew up on Lap 2 gets the least. Then there are contingency awards. You get them for doing certain things...like, Heinz could give $1000 to the driver leading on Lap 57, or T-Mobile (who has the My 10 plan that allows unlimited calling to 10 numbers you choose) could give $100 to any driver that led exactly 10 laps. To be eligible for a contingency plan award you have to run that company's sticker, which explains a lot of the smaller decals on the cars. After they add up all the contingency awards and such, it's possible for the fifth-place driver to earn more money than the winner. That usually doesn't happen, but in midfield it's real common to see drivers make more money than drivers who finished ahead of them.
no the purse is determinded on the race when you bet you get some money fromo the purse if the horse u bet on wins Actually, the Purse has nothing to do with the amount of money wagered in a horse race. The Handle is the total amount wagered on that race and after the track takes some out and the taxes are removed then the rest is divied up among the winning tickets. These are called Pools and there is one for each style/type of bet (Win Pool, Place Pool, Show Pool, Exacta Pool, Trifecta Pool, Pick 3 Pool, etc).
This depends on the track and on how far down the ranks the track is paying. "Generally, first place gets 60% second 20% third 10% fourth 5% with the remaining 5% paying out to some portion of the rest of the field. Some states/tracks pay every horse in the race a set amount...say 350 dollars, which encourages more starters. In some races the money to pay the field comes from the winning horse's part of the purse in others it is taken from the purse "up front" with the remainder split between places 1-3, 1-5 depending on the condition book or on decisions made for a specific race meet, day of week.
The Dubai Cup has a US$10 Million purse making it the richest race in the world. The race is held at Meydan Race Track in Dubai, UAE.
The purse
A horse races for purse money only under certain conditions where allowing betting would be unfair to the betting public. The most common reason is when one horse of an entry is scratched after betting opens for that race. In many racing jurisdictions, the other horse is allowed to run, but for purse money only. All money bet on the entry is refunded.
The Dubai World Cup is the richest with a $10 million purse
The largest horse racing purse in the US is the $5,000,000 offered at the Breeders' Cup Classic.
I think so... only for a split second :)
The biggest purse in Horse racing is 6 million dollars in the Dubi World Cup. In North America it is the Breeders Cup Classic with a purse of 5 million dollars.

Yes, it WAS a race, it is no longer a horse race.
