Very important, just like any other animal they do need food and water to survive, horses also need salts and minerals. A race horse is kinda like a Olympic athlete, they need more food than a horse that is used for lessons or just at a barn, plus Thoroughbreds usually will need more food anyhow. They are feed high energy food that is good for fattening. If they don't have enough food or have too much they will either not be able to run as far or as fast, and if they have too much it can result them to getting fat or maybe even a bit to jittery. If they are not in top notch care they have increased risks of getting injured or sick.
