he was close but so are sooo many other racehorses nominated for the triple crown just look at big brown. what sucks is breeders of racehorses breed for speed not sturdyness so since the triple crown races are so close together to where the racehorses arn't used to running in races so close together they get tired and can't win the whole thing and in Barbaro's case since he wasnt bred to be sturdy his body couldn't hold up to it so he broke down. Its sad but true.
that entire answer above me is wrong. Barbaro was not close to winning because he did not finish the preakness and it is not because of him being "sturdy" or whatever they think somehow when he did a false start it triggered something in his ankle and pastern......he did not break down because he was not "sturdy" he took a bad step and there is no such thing as breeding horses to be sturdy so they don't break down thoroughbreds are very light and thin on the track they get tired because of distance and jockeys letting the horses blow out the first few furlongs.
Barbaro just had a bad start at the Preakness Stakes but in my opinion as the class of Barbaro if that accident didn't happen he would have swept the Triple Crown Championship because that horse has a lot of heart and courage to win.
