Because of a Thoroughbred horse's athletic and powerful haunches and muscles Thoroughbred's can excel in most disciplines. TBs are often used for cross country as they are powerful enough to get themselves and riders over fences and also fast enough to get around the course. TBs are quite good at xcountry if they are trained or ridden that way. They are good at jumping, dressage, racing and other sports as well.

Steeplechasing needs no specific breed but is usually Thoroughbred or Thoroughbred cross. Then different breeds have their own racing, AQHA, APHA,ApHA, Arabian.

The Thoroughbred is used as a racehorse because that is what it was created for. The Thoroughbred was created to be the ultimate racehorse and it is. They tend to grow faster and mature sooner than any other breed of horse. However the practice of racing them as two year old is detrimental to the breed as it creates health problems for the horses.
Most of the light horse breeds and ponies can jump. While the draft breeds are currently being used to cross breed and produce larger horses for jumping they are generally too large to hold up to jumping themselves.
There are horse events in the Olympics: Show-jumping But a so called "Horse Olympics" where horses participate in dressage,show-jumping, cross country etc are called gymkhanas.
Well, my favorite is the Anglo-Arabian. It is a cross between an Arab and a thoroughbred. Absolutely gorgeous!! Arabian blood is commonly found in horses of all breeds. Index-Quarter Horse, Anglo Arabian,
