According to the Baltimore Sun, Donnelly worked for Roger Staubach's real estate company after spending 23 years in the U.S. Navy. And, according to majorleaguelacrosse.com:

"While on active duty for nearly 24 years in the Navy Civil Engineer Corps, Donnelly was deployed to Vietnam before entering graduate school in England for two years before returning to the US and enrolling at MIT. Donnelly has a long list of accomplishments including Director of Construction for the U.S. Embassy, Mechanical Engineering Instructor for the United States Naval Academy, Commanding Officer of the Naval Construction Battalion and Public Works Officer at the Naval Weapons Station. Donnelly retired as a captain in 1988. While serving his country, Donnelly was honored with the Legion of Merit Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and Vietnam Service and Campaign Medals."
