From the point of view of physics, play is work in the sense that you are moving your body through space in a definite direction caused by an external force. Play involves a transfer of energy causing your body to move. You are always exerting energy when you play. You do work whenever you walk, run, climb, jump, throw, swim, lift weights or participate in any game or sport. In this sense any activity of the body is work and that includes play, games, and sports. From a more general perspective, play can be considered work when the activity involves a goal or objective to be achieved or attained. Seen from this perspective, all games and sports are work because they direct your physical and mental energy toward the achievement or attainment of some goal or objective. In the case of games and sports, the goal or objective is usually to win or beat your competition. Also games and sports are highly organized and regulated in view of the goal or objective which is another characteristic of work. From the point of view of economics, play is not considered work because it is not necessary or compulsory for your survival. You are not producing any goods or providing any services while playing unless you play professional sports. We can do without play, games, and sports because they are not necessary activities for our survival. You are also not earning any money by playing unless again you play professional sports. So we can say with the exception of probably economics that work is any human activity whether physical or mental and that includes play, games, and sports. But play, games, and sports are always activities that are freely chosen for the pleasure they provide and are never coerced upon a person.
