As long as you are not morbidly obese to the point were it is difficult to walk then yes, a "fat guy" can play football. Just look at any NFL game and you can clearly see that many of the players have a quite a gut. Also, by playing football you will most likely lose a lot of weight and get in better shape so I would say this is a very good idea.
